Supporting vulnerable families to get medical insurance
Dear our esteemed reader,
Greetings from Save for Health Uganda (SHU).
SHU is an indigenous NGO established in 2002 and officially registered in March 2003. Currently, SHU operates in 12 districts across Uganda East-Africa. The organization’s mission is to enhance the quality of health of Ugandans through self-managed Community Health Financing (CHF) schemes.
Despite the free healthcare policy in Uganda, many rural communities struggle to afford healthcare costs, even at Private Not-for-Profit Facilities where charges are relatively affordable. In these communities, vulnerable families often resort to self-medication, selling life-sustaining assets and property, and other similar coping strategies to access healthcare.
To address this issue, SHU is promoting Community Health Insurance (CHI) schemes and empowering scheme members with knowledge and skills to start/manage Income Generating Activities to enable them earn a regular income. These schemes allow families to purchase low-cost health insurance policies and access quality medical services from private healthcare facilities in their catchment areas. Membership in these schemes is open to all community members without discrimination. However, certain groups of people such as the elderly, people with disabilities, orphans, widows, and the unemployed, due to their limited capacity to pay annual premiums, remain outside the scheme despite their challenges and interest to join.
SHU has launched a fundraising campaign to support families in the districts of Luwero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola to get medical insurance cover for the year 2025. The aim is to assist families who are interested in the program but are unable to afford their annual premiums.
For Ugx 60,000/USD 16.5 per person or Ugx 360,000/USD 98.5 for a family of six, individuals and families can access all medical services offered by the contracted healthcare providers for the year 2025. This campaign will run up to 31st December 2024.
Munno mu Bulwadde Union of Schemes Organization (MBUSO) is the community health insurance (CHI) scheme for families in Luwero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola Districts. MBUSO has existed since 2006 and covers 20,000 people per year on average.
